Over-multi-tasking? Brain stretched to limit? Here's tips to relax and de-stress so you can remember better.

While emailing with a New York Times reporter about memory tips, he wrote:

"Judy:  Trying to stretch my mind, but it's stretched to the limit, I'm afraid, and feeling the wear and tear of the strain."

Here's my reply to him - perhaps it speaks to you as well:

"I hear your pain from the strain of too much on the brain.

When I'm in that spot, these three easy strategies work:

1.  I take a breathing space break often throughout the day.  It's easy.  A simple deep breath in through my nose, filling my belly with air to the count of four, and then breathing out through my mouth to the count of six as if floating a feather in the air.

2.  I meditate to calm my mind and give it resting time.

3.  I give myself permission to take even a twenty-minute holiday and do something totally different and fun."

Let me know if you find the above helpful.  Also let me know what  destressers you have up your sleeve.Blog-on!

Don't Forget: Your Brain Needs both Mental and Physical Exercise! (a Reminder for people with an over-busy schedule)

Before you look at your watch and say to yourself, "I'm just too busy.  I’ve barely got a half-hour to spare.  Something on my schedule's gotta give." ...

Before you think, "I'll do my brain a favor.  I'll squeeze in thirty minutes to tackle the crossword puzzle, or Suduko, or finish my book, or work on my French, or my taxes, or my email, or clear off my desk… and blow off my exercise," think again.

With the dynamic-duo of both mental and physical exercise, you get a more powerful brain advantage.

Your brain needs both mental and physical stimulation.

Ask yourself, “Which type of exercise have I done for my brain lately?  How well do I balance my brain power activities?  Am I doing enough cross-training for my brain?”

Just as mental challenges stimulate your brain power - (you don’t have to take up rocket science, almost any activity will do provided it snares your interest and stimulates your brain to learn new challenges) - so does physical exercise stimulate new brain cell growth.

Exercise Grows New Brain Cells.

Physical exercise is a critical component of good health.  Among its many benefits, exercise grows new brain cells.  Studies show about one-half hour of exercise about three or four times a week stimulates neurogenesis, the growth of neurons, because it increases activity in the part of the brain which is important to learning and memory.

Your brain benefits when you think “How can I best balance my mental and physical exercise?”

Now, wouldn’t you say that’s an extraordinary reason to work out both mentally and physically? – and who wouldn’t want to increase their brain power possibility?

Just imagine:  the dynamic duo of mental and physical exercise helps you look better – feel better – and remember better.

Have you figurered out how to balance your mental-vs-physical time?  Let me hear from you.  Blog on to share your success stories and your time-management dilemnas.

Don’t forget!

Memory Improvement Speaker Disappears in Bermuda Triangle. Or, Remember to Save Your Memory While It's Fresh in Your Mind - Before it Evaporates

I waited too long and I lost a treasured memory of Bermuda-- so now can I get it back?

Early this March I was in Bermuda, as the keynote speaker for the Wonderful Women being honored at the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce 2nd Annual Wonder Woman Luncheon.

I was enamored with the beauty of the island, and charmed by all the people I encountered.  They treated me royally -- and The Bermuda Royal Gazette ran a great article about my memory training keynote presentation.  They even included a photo of me on the podium of the Fairmont Hotel -- a photo capturing an energetic and laughing me --  (If you're like me and you usually sift through fifty-seven photos to find the one that shows your personality and hides the wrinkles - or whatever it is you wish wasn't showing -  then you can understand why I was so thrilled to see a candid photo of me that I loved.)

Had I only acted soon enough.  Then I could have included a link in this blog article so - if you wanted to - you could just click onto the March 10, 2008 Bermuda Royal  Gazette page and see me in my glory.

But too much time elapsed - and there is now a different article - and a different photo - and mine is in the archives and I will have to do a lot of research to get it back.  And when I do, I will send it out so you can see it, if you wish.

Lessons learned as life imitates memory training.

Notice how similar this "lost in the internet photo experience" is to when you're introduced to someone, and you wait too long to pay attention and capture his or her name - and then the name evaporates from your mind as you are introduced to the next person...

So you can see
- whether it's names and faces you want to recall, or newspaper articles posted on the internet you want to be able to click on - how important it is for you to understand what is important to you - and then not wait to capture the images you want to remember - or, they'll disappear.

Don't forget to take the time to remember!

Share your stories.

How about you?  Do you have stories to share about something you lost because you didn't pay attention?  Blog on and share your stories!

How to Remember Phone Numbers: Increase your memory power, not your phone's

Have you ever been asked for a phone number - perhaps even your own - and without even flinching, you immediately look it up on your cell phone?

Quick – try this test. Touch dial – WITH YOUR FINGERS -  the ten most important phone numbers in your life – the numbers that you wouldn’t want to be lost in a personal or business emergency without – and the unlisted numbers that you couldn’t call information to get.

If you can’t recall all of those important-to-you numbers – then take these positive steps right now to stretch and strengthen your “mental Rolodex”:

At least once a week, physically punch in the vitally important core phone numbers.

Using only the speed dial on your phones may save you a few seconds per call, but consider this:  it gives the phone the good memory power, not you!

BLOG ON!  Please let me know what experiences you have with speed dialing and/or losing your cell phone.

Please forward this blog to as many friends and associates as you wish.  Hopefully they'll become Memory Tipsters as well.

Here's the SKINNY on Remembering People's Names - Make Party Time Unforgettable!

It's party time!  Want to improve your memory so you can remember the names of the people you meet this holiday season?  You will,if you think SLIM:

  1. Set your intention.  Focus.  Think, "YES, I can!"
  2. LOVE* the name of each person you choose to remember.
  3. If a name gets stuck on the tip-of-your-tongue, just take a deep breath and start talking.
  4. Make yourself memorable too.

Sherrie Wolf is getting ready to be a smash hit at a prospective client's company party.  She knows that name recognition is one of the greatest compliments you can give a person.  She's prepared... she's thinking SLIM ... she's putting her Judy Marcus, Memory Lady WHERE ARE MY KEYS? Memory Training to work... and SO CAN YOU!Love

Set your intention.  Focus.  Think, "YES, I can!" - Just thinking this positive thought gets your brain juices flowing and your receptors ready to remember.

*LOVE the name of each person you choose to remember. - Actively plant someone's name in your memory simply by falling in LOVE.  Regular users of the LOVE Memory Method know how easy it is to fall in LOVE when it comes to rememering names and faces.

When you meet someone new, apply the four-step LOVE acronym:

  • Look:  See the face, listen to the name, use your finger to write the name in your palm.
  • Overstate:   Think something outrageous about their name, i.e.  Sherrie Wolf. Imagine Sherrie chugging a bottle of Sherry while riding on the back of a dancing wolf.
  • Visualize:  Picture the outrageous image in your mind's eye on the movie screen right inside your forehead.
  • Engrave:  Repeat this movie image every twenty minutes until it's firmly stored in your brain.

If a name gets stuck on the tip-of-your-tongue, just take a deep breath and start talking. - And keep talking. Talk about the person you want to mention (or introduce).  Tell anything you remember.

"Hi.  I'd like you to meet my best friend. We went to the ballgame last night.  I've known this guy since I was five..."

and on and on...  Don't skip a beat.  TRUST that as you relax while talking around the name you're looking for, the back burner of your brain is at work.  What you want to remember will suddenly pop right off the tip-of-your tongue and into your voice.

Make yourself memorable too. - Help others to remember your name.  When you meet someone new, refresh their memory by referring to your own name often throughout the conversation. They'll be glad you did.

My husand and I help others to remember in this way.  He refers to Judy and I refer to Steve:

"When I saw that bowl of chocolates in front of me, I said to myself, "Judy, Judy, Judy.  Just two pieces..."    "Marcus this fact:  Steve likes tennis...",  "Judy makes remembering fun and unforgettable..."

By thinking SLIM and using the LOVE Memory Method this holiday season, memory improvement will reign!  You're sure to remember all the names you choose to remember - and you'll make yourself memorable too!
