LOVE Memory Method

Over-multi-tasking? Brain stretched to limit? Here's tips to relax and de-stress so you can remember better.

While emailing with a New York Times reporter about memory tips, he wrote:

"Judy:  Trying to stretch my mind, but it's stretched to the limit, I'm afraid, and feeling the wear and tear of the strain."

Here's my reply to him - perhaps it speaks to you as well: 

"I hear your pain from the strain of too much on the brain.

When I'm in that spot, these three easy strategies work:

1.  I take a breathing space break often throughout the day.  It's easy.  A simple deep breath in through my nose, filling my belly with air to the count of four, and then breathing out through my mouth to the count of six as if floating a feather in the air.

2.  I meditate to calm my mind and give it resting time.

3.  I give myself permission to take even a twenty-minute holiday and do something totally different and fun."

Here's the SKINNY on Remembering People's Names - Make Party Time Unforgettable!

It's party time!  Want to improve your memory so you can remember the names of the people you meet this holiday season?  You will,if you think SLIM:

  1. Set your intention.  Focus.  Think, "YES, I can!"
  2. LOVE* the name of each person you choose to remember.
  3. If a name gets stuck on the tip-of-your-tongue, just take a deep breath and start talking.
  4. Make yourself memorable too.

Sherrie Wolf is getting ready to be a smash hit at a prospective client's company party.  She knows that name recognition is one of the greatest compliments you can give a person.  She's prepared... she's thinking SLIM ... she's putting her Judy Marcus, Memory Lady WHERE ARE MY KEYS? Set your intention.  Focus.  Think, "YES, I can!" - Just thinking this positive thought gets your brain juices flowing and your receptors ready to remember.

*LOVE the name of each person you choose to remember. - Actively plant someone's name in your memory simply by falling in LOVE.  Regular users of the LOVE Memory Method know how easy it is to fall in LOVE when it comes to rememering names and faces. 

     When you meet someone new, apply the four-step LOVE acronym: 

  • Look:  See the face, listen to the name, use your finger to write the name in your palm. 
  • Overstate:   Think something outrageous about their name, i.e.  Sherrie Wolf. Imagine Sherrie chugging a bottle of Sherry while riding on the back of a dancing wolf. 
  • Visualize:  Picture the outrageous image in your mind's eye on the movie screen right inside your forehead.
  • Engrave:  Repeat this movie image every twenty minutes until it's firmly stored in your brain.

If a name gets stuck on the tip-of-your-tongue, just take a deep breath and start talking. - And keep talking. Talk about the person you want to mention (or introduce).  Tell anything you remember. 

"Hi.  I'd like you to meet my best friend. We went to the ballgame last night.  I've known this guy since I was five..."

and on and on...  Don't skip a beat.  TRUST that as you relax while talking around the name you're looking for, the back burner of your brain is at work.  What you want to remember will suddenly pop right off the tip-of-your tongue and into your voice.

Make yourself memorable too. - Help others to remember your name.  When you meet someone new, refresh their memory by referring to your own name often throughout the conversation. They'll be glad you did. 

My husand and I help others to remember in this way.  He refers to Judy and I refer to Steve:

"When I saw that bowl of chocolates in front of me, I said to myself, "Judy, Judy, Judy.  Just two pieces..."    "Marcus this fact:  Steve likes tennis...",  "Judy makes remembering fun and unforgettable..." 

By thinking SLIM and using the LOVE Memory Method this holiday season, memory improvement will reign!  You're sure to remember all the names you choose to remember - and you'll make yourself memorable too!
